Excalibur RetrievalWare™ is an integrated family of software components enabling knowledge retrieval solutions for all types of textual information, including unstructured text, compound documents, word processor documents, real-time text streams and RDBMS data. RetrievalWare™ seamlessly integrates Excalibur's powerful APRP™ (Adaptive Pattern Recognition Processing) and Semantic Network technologies into enterprise knowledge systems deployed across secure intranets and the World Wide Web.

Excalibur RetrievalWare™ provides highly scalable, distributed client/server and Web server components which support multiple, independent server processes for maximizing efficiency and reliability of input, indexing and query handling. RetreivalWare™ includes a rich set of application development tools ranging from MS Visual Basic to C-callable libraries. RetrievalWare™ platforms include all major UNIX and Windows/NT servers with PC, UNIX and Internet clients.

    Excalibur RetrievalWare™ components include:

  • Web Server interface featuring template-based CGI (common gateway interface) support for any HTTP server. Unlike other Web search engines, Excalibur RetrievalWare™ deploys a dedicated front-end server, providing superior handling of large volumes of user queries across intranets and the World Wide Web. The RetrievalWare Web server is fully compliant with Netscape's Communications and Commerce Servers through the Netscape Server API.

The RetrievalWare Web Server provides HTML templates which utilize macro variables for extremely fast and flexible customization of user search and retrieval interfaces. Rather than having to write CGI scripts in PERL or C, developers can simply use a text editor to modify the Web Server's HTML templates. Forms automatically adjust for multiple configurations of libraries and fields and offer comprehensive choices of buttons, pull-down menus, select links and hypertext links.

  • Integrated Security Server, a key requirement for intranet solutions, provides authentication for every client/server transaction. The RetrievalWare Security Server includes comprehensive control of user and group access to specific server functions, APIs for auditing all user transactions (including queries and document browsing), and more.

  • Profiling Server is a high-performance system for filtering newswires, email messages, file transfers and other dynamic information streams in real-time. RetrievalWare's Profiling Server architecture is optimized for real-time performance while preserving complete symmetry with RetrievalWare Text Servers. This design facilitates the development of applications which fully integrate retrospective searching and real-time content profiling.

  • RetrievalWare Semantic and Pattern Server integrates Excalibur's APRP™ and Semantic Network technologies with a full suite of traditional text retrieval techniques. The Semantic and Pattern Server offers the industry's most complete range of text retrieval options, including word meaning-based and pattern recognition-based searching, plain English searching and fuzzy searching, statistical searching, and full Boolean logic searching.

  • RetrievalWare Pattern Server combines APRP™, statistical and Boolean searching techniques and is optimized for applications requiring a high level of fault-tolerance, such as document management applications based on scanning and OCR of large volumes of hard copy documents. The Pattern Server's APRP™ engine is language independent, enabling rapid development of multi-language text retrieval systems.

  • Generic RDBMS functions in High-Level API allow RetrievalWare to serve as a front-end to a Relational Database for any RDBMS function. If the client needs to execute an RDBMS SQL statement, RetrievalWare will pass this statement to the RDBMS and then will pass the results back to the client. With this capability, RW clients can access relational databases without having to install additional RDBMS client software, dramatically simplifying client installation and maintenance. A RetrievalWare ODBC database bridge is provided to allow access to any ODBC-compliant RDBMS.

  • Generic RDBMS functions in Web Interface allow any generic RDBMS function to be handled without writing any 'C' or PERL code. Using RetrievalWare's macro extensions to HTML, an interface can execute any RDBMS SQL statement and display the results in HTML. This feature allows mixing of RDBMS and text search results in a single interface.

  • RetrievalWare Synchronizers monitor file systems, groupware repositories and databases on both servers and clients. Synchronizers determine if new documents have appeared or if previously indexed documents have been modified, and submit the documents for indexing or re-indexing. Synchronizers are available for monitoring server file systems, client file systems, RDBMSs, Usenet newsgroups, and Lotus Notes.

  • RetrievalWare™ Java API allows developers to create query, profile, and document handler client programs as both applets and applications using Java language. RetrievalWare Java applets communicate directly with RetrievalWare Servers to provide search functions in a Web browser environment. Applets can be accessed by any Web browser from across the Internet or within an intranet.

  • Hierarchy Server provides RetrievalWare developers and administrators with a tool to register, control access to, and display all libraries, queries and other data structures which are accessible through RetrievalWare. This server provides a hierarchical view of all information assets which are accessible through RetrievalWare. The Hierarchy Server has been integrated into the RetrievalWare Web-based search interface to allow users to browse and select libraries for searching.

  • RetrievalWare Administration Wizards provide easy setup of libraries, document parsers, search servers, hierarchy servers, system parameters, RDB indexers, profiling and security.

  • Multiple Language Support includes semantic dictionaries for English, French and Spanish.
